Luis F. Valera is the founding member of the Valera Diaz & Associates law firm. He brings decades of experience navigating the many branches of government along with a unique understanding of how they effect people and businesses.
Most recently he served as the Vice President for Government Affairs for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the state's largest doctoral granting research institution. A member of the President's cabinet, Luis served as an integral part of the administration leadership team, holding decision making authority over major university wide initiatives, budget priorities, and implementation of the institution's vision and mission.
Prior to his tenure as Vice President at UNLV, Valera was appointed by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to serve as a utilities regulator for the Nevada Public Utilities Commission, a statewide quasi-judicial / decision making agency that promulgates programs, public policies and regulates electric, natural gas, water, and other utilities.
Active in numerous state and local organizations for almost two decades, Valera's community leadership roles include serving as chairman of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, a decision-making statewide agency charged with promoting strategic growth and expansion throughout Nevada's various economic sectors and is former president of the Nevada Tourism Alliance (NTA) in Las Vegas. His tenure as president of the NTA included the development and execution of collaborative programs and initiatives intended to unify the various businesses, industries, and business community partners within and throughout the tourism industry across the state of Nevada and the various gaming states.
Valera holds both undergraduate and doctoral degrees from UNLV, earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science and juris doctorate from the William S. Boyd School of Law. As an undergraduate, Luis served in leadership roles as student body vice president and as a registered student-lobbyist for UNLV's student government working with faculty, students, university administration, and community leaders to promote the university's priorities. After earning his bachelor's degree, Luis went on to work on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. for his Member of Congress. Soon after, he would move back to Nevada to complete his legal education where his career in law, business, and public policy took root.
